Intelligent People and the Problem of Love

An above-average number of intelligent people go through life as singles. Why this is is not so easily to answered. To be too intelligent for a relationship is a frequent judgment from the outside, and basically a compliment, even if a highly dubious one. If you ask the people concerned themselves, you will rarely get a good answer to the question of why? In fact, there is not just one, but several, which we’ll present to you in this article.

1. Intelligent People Think Everything Through to the Last Detail

Their imagination runs at full speed, even in the case of a new acquaintance. So many scenarios are played out that there are guaranteed to be some that advise against the new love. Instead of leaning back and letting the beautiful things take their course, horror scenarios arise before their mind's eye, which nip any romance in the bud.

2. They Like To Be Independent

Intelligent people have their lives under control. They know what they can do and also how to get what they want. People who can look to this track record in life rarely have a need for an outside connection. A new partner could jeopardize self-determination and result in emotional dependence.

3. Reason Triumphs over Emotion

Those lucky enough to have an above-average-functioning brain are also used to using it. That’s great, but in the case of romance and partnerships, the mind can be more of a hindrance than a benefit. Some things in the interpersonal area can neither be put into words nor mathematically calculated, nor logically fathomed. In such areas feelings, if we would listen to them, could give at least as good advice as our thoughts.

4. Intelligent People Are Suspicious and Cautious

Whether it's life experience advising them here, or statistics advising caution in dealing with fellow human beings, anyone who is smart knows that not all people are trustworthy. However, to apply the reverse here and go on the defensive in advance for fear of being hurt or taken advantage of creates an invisible force field that no one can get through.

5. They Are Always Looking Toward Their Goals

As nice as it is to let a new love into your life, intelligent people will never lose sight of their goals because of it. It doesn't matter whether it's professional career jumps, athletic ambition, or involvement in an honorary position. The new partners would change absolutely nothing in these priorities.

6. Inner Values Count More Than Appearances

Love makes every heart beat faster. However, the requirement of getting to know one another takes time. If you aim to quickly develop a relationship, an intelligent person’s caution and analytical approach might put you on a long pathway. Interpreting this cautious character study as disinterest, you might head off in another direction.

7. Intelligent People Have High Standards

They have these first and foremost for themselves, but then also for their environment. In the long term, this sense of entitlement holds great potential for friendships and relationships that are long-lasting and, above all, of quality.

8. They Are Reserved

If intelligent people sometimes appear somewhat reserved to others, and tend to keep their distance, this is a sign of their alert mind. Unfortunately, this also keeps them away from people who mean them no harm or could even do them good.

9. Intelligence Is Intimidating

No one likes to look stupid. When talking to intelligent people, this can happen pretty quickly, at least in a perceived way. After all, even if they make an effort to be sociable, it will always be a challenge for the average person to keep up with them mentally.

10. They Love Their Freedom

Those who are intelligent do not like to be restricted or hindered. They could not take a situation in which their mind then couldn't flourish, goals couldn't be achieved, or independence could be compromised. In particular, long-term singles are used to maintaining their structure and daily routine. Any request for change from the outside will be viewed critically and seen as a potential attempt at manipulation.

11. Intelligent People Like to Speak Clearly

This may be chalked up to conceit, arrogance, or impudence. Basically, intelligent people are just very convinced of what they say or do. They believe they are in the right, and are not afraid to communicate it that way. Unfortunately, this doesn't necessarily always make them appear likable to others, which definitely makes it harder to get to know them.

12. They Are Sore Losers

People who are used to being at home on the sunny side of life, and having an easy time with all the challenges life has to offer from an early age, are bad at one thing: losing. In relationships, however, it is sometimes necessary to simply give in, to let things be, and/or to let the other person have his or her way. Intelligent people find this particularly difficult when it is objectively clear that they are in the right.

13. No One Can Keep Up With Them

An important prerequisite for a relationship is meeting eye-to-eye. This should be true socially and financially, otherwise the works can be gummed up. Those who are highly intelligent naturally find it difficult to find a suitable partner who can keep up. What helps is to limit the search to a promising so-called hunting ground. Someone who can solve quantum equations off the cuff for fun is not likely to meet his or her life partner at happy hour.

14. Even New Things Quickly Become Boring

Many intelligent people know the problem. Their attention span is very short. New challenges quickly lose their appeal for them as soon as they have been successfully mastered. There is a reason that children with above-average intelligence stand out at school because of their disruptive behavior. Unfortunately, many highfliers have a similar experience in relationships. Once the first hurdles have been successfully overcome and the new love is in the bag so to speak, they mentally begin to devote themselves to new challenges again.

15. They Feel Completely at Home Being Single

Many intelligent singles are single not from a concatenation of so-called unhappy circumstances, but from free choice. One who knows both marriage and living alone might pick living alone as a conscious choice. Those who have many interests, clear goals in mind, and know how to fill their lives with new challenges every day can manage very well on their own. It is neither a case of mental disorder nor anti-social behavior.. These people simply had a choice and made it.

Today’s Conclusion: Intelligent and Alone, But Not Lonely

People with an alert mind may have a hard time dealing with others. However, they mostly take it easy. The reason: Their thoughts never stop but proceed usually at full speed. This automatically leaves no time for pointless brooding or a bath in self-pity. The biggest mistake they could make in their search for a partner would be to lower their own standards or even ignore them. Only a relationship among equals in all respects promises a strong marriage in the long term. That's it for today.
